SOCAP Spotlight: Sanergy
Sanergy, a pioneering social enterprise in Nairobi, Kenya builds healthy, prosperous communities in Africa’s informal settlements by making hygienic sanitation affordable and accessible. Sanergy’s systems-based approach empowers the local community to own and operate sanitation facilities, while Sanergy provides business and operational support to ensure its operators thrive. Sanergy collects and recycles the waste into organic fertilizer, which is sold to Kenyan farmers to address the region’s food security challenges. In just 2.5 years, Sanergy has launched over 460 Fresh Life facilities run by a network of 240 operators who serve over 18,000 residents with hygienic sanitation daily. Sanergy also employs 162 teammates – 93% Kenyan and 40% under 25.
Becky is responsible for leveraging partners and funds toward Sanergy’s strategy for scale and sustainability. Her team has developed more than 25 partnerships toward expanding coverage, designing toilets, piloting new service delivery models, measuring impact, increasing user demand, improving waste processing technologies, developing new by-products and bringing organic fertilizer to market. She has extensive experience in financial and contractual management relevant to USAID rules and regulations. She holds a BA from Duke University in Political Science, specializing in Global Public Health. She lives in Nairobi, Kenya.
